Sophia gives me a guilty look while Tally shakes her head in clear bewilderment.

“I believe your friend was trying to lift your mood.” Tobias comes up behind me and wraps his arms around my waist. He rubs his cheek against my hair, trying to cover the scent the imps left behind with his own. “An effort that worked, in my opinion.”

Around the kitchen, happy faces are turned toward me, and I relax into my catalyst demon’s embrace. “Thank you. I really did need this.”

“It’s not just her body that requires nourishment,” Sophia admonishes, her attention focused on Tobias instead of me.

“I see that now,” he rumbles. “But the danger is still present.”

“There’s always danger,” she counters. “And, it’s good for the imps to see their Master every so often.”

And it’s good for me to see them. I don’t even recognize all the faces, though I hold all of their contracts. I hadn’t been by the imps’ house to make sure the new ones settled in okay and didn’t have any problems they wanted to address. So much has happened that needed my immediate attention that I’ve neglected my duties with them. Even though Sophia is my liaison, I should have still made a point to check-in.

I straighten and smile. “Well, since we’re here, how about I pop up front and check-in with Martha, too? I could use a coffee. While I do that, decide what you guys want for dinner. Tally will order whatever you want.” As the imps chitter with excitement, I glance up at Tobias. “You want a cup of tea to go?”

“That sounds good.” He kisses my cheek before he releases me. “But you can’t go out front looking like this.”

I glance down and realize I’m still in his oversized shirt and my pink yoga pants. Not very professional.

“Here, take my coat.” Tally shrugs out of her chef’s jacket and holds it out.

Tobias helps me into it, then walks ahead of me out of the kitchen. I don’t wait for his go-ahead to follow him out, though. No one who means harm can come into my shop without me knowing, and I won’t be near the front window to make myself a target.

The number of people in line and at the tables gratifies me, and the sense of happiness in the air is thicker out here. Business is doing far better than I ever could have dreamed, and it fills me with a sense of pride. Not only have I achieved my dream with the bakery, but it’s become a safe place for imps to learn and evolve. An unfamiliar imp stands at the cash register, ringing up orders while another imp boxes up the treats, happy and confident in their new jobs.

Martha beams at me as I join her at the espresso machine, and I give her a side hug so she doesn’t have to stop making the drink she’s working on. “Everything going well?”

“Yes, Master.” She deftly pours shots into a cup and tops it with frothy milk.
